Why should we be eating seasonally?

At Nuferm HQ, we love living as close to nature as possible and it’s something we feel society has lost sight of over time. We love eating seasonal foods mainly because its a great way to connect with nature and support our local farmers while enjoying the freshest flavours.

We’re naturally drawn to eating the cooler foods in Summer and the warmer foods in winter, but what about the other two seasons of the year? Should we just eat what’s available at the supermarket (AKA everything?).

Seasonal produce is often harvested at its peak ripeness, which means it’s packed with nutrients for our health and incredible flavour, plus, buying in-season fruits and vegies tends to be more affordable and environmentally friendly, as they require less energy for transportation and storage.

By choosing fresh, seasonal foods, we’re not only getting the most nutrient bang-for-our-buck but we also get to enjoy more vibrant & diverse dishes, all while contributing towards sustainable eating practices that benefit the planet and right here in our local community – WIN!

Here’s a quick guide to what’s in season in Australia in Spring:

1. Asparagus: Picture the green spears poking their heads out of the earth, eager for their moment in the sun! Asparagus is at its peak in spring, and its crisp texture is perfect for salads or lightly grilled.

2. Strawberries: These juicy gems start to pop up, brightening up any dessert or breakfast! Whether you’re tossing them into a smoothie or enjoying them fresh with a dollop of cream, they scream “springtime delight!”

3. Peas: Sweet and tender, spring peas are like nature’s little green candies. From pea soup to fresh salads, they add a delightful crunch and sweetness to dishes.

4. Broccoli: With its vibrant green florets, broccoli thrives in the cooler spring air. Steam it, stir-fry it, or toss it into a salad—it’s a versatile superhero in the veggie world.

5. Spinach: This leafy green packs a nutrient punch and flourishes in spring. Use it in salads, smoothies, or as a bed for poached eggs—a true spring sensation.

6. Radishes: These little crunchy orbs bring a peppery zing to your plate. Slice them into salads or roast them for a caramelized treat—spring’s spicy secret.

7. Citrus Fruits: Oranges, lemons, and limes are still in season, adding zesty brightness to dishes and drinks. Squeeze some sunshine into your recipes.

8. Herbs: Basil, coriander, and mint burst forth, ready to elevate your culinary creations. Fresh herbs are like the fairy dust of the kitchen—sprinkle them generously.

9. Cherries: Towards the end of spring, cherries start making their debut. Sweet, juicy, and perfect for snacking or baking, they are the sweet heralds of summer.

10. Fennel: With its anise-like flavour, fennel adds a sophisticated touch to salads and roasts. Its crunchy texture and refreshing taste embody the essence of spring.
